Private Streets

DEFINITION

These are non-adopted (private land) streets in residential areas that serve up to five dwellings. Very occasionally, these type of streets do not connect places and they are dead ends or cul-de-sacs. If a private lane connects two places or zones, for example a green space or an existing foot-way, Nottingham City Council will request that an adopted pedestrian foot-way is incorporated.

DIMENSIONS - 3.6m to 5.4m wide

These type of streets can have a minimum width of 3.6m. The addition of a 1.8m adopted footway on one side will be necessary if the street connects two places (e.g. is not a dead end for pedestrians). There is no need for kerbs or to provide any demarcation of vehicular and pedestrian zones unless there is an adopted footpath, in which case this needs to have clear demarcation, for example with durable inset materials such as stones or blocks (not paint) fitted at surface level. This width allows people to circulate whilst cars are moving at a very low speed.
